Title - Women of Classical Mythology: A Biographical Dictionary

Robert E. Bell, "Women of Classical Mythology: A Biographical Dictionary"
ABC-Clio Inc l HTML l 1.5 MB

Book Description :

Everyone is familiar with some of the women of classical myth. Athena, goddess of wisdom, and Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty are particularly well-known, as are the snake-haired Gorgon Medusa, and the vicious harpies, half woman, half beast. Humans, too, have their place in the ancient lore: Medea, who killed her own children to gain revenge upon her husband Jason, and Helen of Troy, whose abduction by Paris incited the ten-year Trojan War. But these figures represent only a handful of the hundreds and hundreds of female characters who played essential roles in the poetry, drama, and folklore that arose from Greek and Roman mythology. And despite the rich diversity of these figures, standard reference works on mythology and related subjects often give them short shrift.

This fascinating book is the first and only comprehensive biographical dictionary devoted to mythological women. It offers unprecedented access to information on hard-to-find women in Greek and Roman myth, as well as a fresh look at the better-known figures. From the famous to the obscure, all of them are here--from Cardea, a Roman divinity who protected the hinges of doors, to Echidna, a half-woman, half-serpent who mated with her fire-breathing brother Typhon, to Ate, the goddess of error. In addition, readers will learn new facts about old favorites: how Zeus ordered the proverbially garrulous Echo to distract Hera while he enjoyed sexual relations with Echo's sister nymphs; that Melpomene, muse of tragedy, was reputed to be mother of the sirens; that Diana--known as the Roman equivalent of Artemis, goddess of chastity and the hunt--had been worshiped as a Latin and Sabine diety from a much earlier era.

The approximately 2,600 lively, engagingly written entries are arranged alphabetically and completely cross-referenced for easy access, and vary from one sentence to several pages. Each entry places its subject both in the overall context of classical myth, and in the frame of reference of her better-known male counterparts. For each figure there is a description of her particular contribution to folklore, and a list of the various poems, tragedies, epics, and other types of stories in which she plays a central role. In addition, the handy special index "The Men in Their Lives" makes it simple to locate a particular women known primarily through relations, for instance, Theseus's mother, or Achilles's wife.

Heroines, murderers, lovers, wives, animals, hermaphrodites, monsters, and transsexuals--the Women of Classical Mythology offers a unique and rich guide to an aspect of ancient literature often overlooked. It will provide readers not only with a valuable reference source, but with hours of delightful browsing.

Title - Dictionary of Jewish-Christian Relations

Edward Kessler & Neil Wenborn, "Dictionary of Jewish-Christian Relations"
Cambridge University Press l PDF l 539 Pages l 5.3 MB

Book Description :

Judaism and Christianity have a relationship that is more than 2,000 years old. Since Jesus was a Jew, the religions share common roots, but relations have not always been friendly. Studying this evolving relationship is an interdisciplinary effort. This volume addresses "not only the theological, but also the philosophical, historical, sociological, and political dimensions of the ongoing encounter between Judaism and Christianity." The editors are the founding and executive director of the Cambridge Center for the Study of Jewish-Christian Relations (Kessler) and a writer (Wenborn). They have assembled a team of international scholars who contributed the articles.

More than 700 alphabetical entries range in length from a few paragraphs to two or three pages. They include biographies (Aaron; Innocent III; Luther, Martin); events (Crusades, Holocaust); places (Jerusalem, Rome); publications and theology (Bible translations, modern English; Commentary); and broad ideas (Chosen people, Resurrection narratives). These examples only scratch the surface. The work is unique in its attempt to take concepts such as Consecration and Dialogue and examine them as they are used in Christian and Jewish contexts, searching for common threads. It also examines various world literatures, taking a look at the portrayal of Jesus and other Christian symbols by Yiddish writers and the fictional treatment of Jews in English literature. Music, Mysticism, and Myth receive similar treatment. The book also has an extensive bibliography and seven maps that show ancient Palestine; the Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, Russian, and British Empires; and modern Israel; and an extensive bibliography. There is a name index but unfortunately no subject index.

A Dictionary of Jewish Christian Relations provides a basis for the study of Jewish--Christian relations in a broader context than the usual theological realm. It is a valuable tool for academic religious studies collections.

Title - Historical Dictionary of Pakistan, 3rd Edition

Shahid Javed Burki, "Historical Dictionary of Pakistan, 3rd Edition"
Scarecrow Press, Inc. l PDF l 635 Pages l 3 MB

Book Description :

At what point should one begin Pakistan's history? Should one start with August 14, 1947 when Lord Louis Mountbatten administered the oath of office to Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Pakistan's first Governor General? If we start with August 14 as Pakistan's birthday, it is impossible to tell Pakistan's full story. To really understand the circumstances that resulted in the birth of Pakistan, one has to go much farther back in history. Beyond Jinnah's call for separate states in 1940, and even beyond the elections of 1937, all the way back to the eighth century when Islam first arrived on the Indian sub-continent. This expanded and updated edition provides concise, accurate, dictionary-style entries on the religious, social, political, economic, and cultural events and leaders that contributed to the founding of the Muslim state. Dr. Burki provides a helpful introduction to aid with historical context. The handy chronology and comprehensive bibliography further augment the usefulness of this volume, making it a helpful guide for the new student of Pakistan and quick ready-reference for the experienced scholar. Praise for the first edition: "...a very useful bibliography... [The introduction]...is a finely crafted essay...provides the user with an insider's view of the emergence of a new nation...a very authoritative and readable source. Recommended for all levels of college and university reference collections." --CHOICE

Book Description :

The Dictionary is the first updated source of Ayurvedic, Unani and Siddha synonyms of their botanical counterparts, after a gap of more than 30 years. The synonyms which appeared in "The Wealth of India" series (1948-1976) and in Chopra’s "Glossary of Indian Medicinal Plants" (1956) have been updated till January, 2007. More than 2000 medicinal plants of "The Ayurvedic Formulary of India" and "The Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India" and more than 100 species of non-Indian origin, incorporated in "National Formulary of Unani Medicine" have been covered in the Dictionary. Scarecrow Press, Inc. l PDF l 536 Pages l 2 MB

Book Description :

Iraq, the land of Hamurabi and Harun al-Rashid, has played a long and unique role in the history of human civilization. The oldest civilization known to man evolved on the shores of its twin rivers, the Tigris and the Euphrates. The great cities of antiquity-Uruk, Ur, Akkad, Babylon, Basra, Mawsil, and Baghdad-were major centers of high culture and political power for much of the course of human history.

This reference begins with the earliest civilizations and covers the many periods that followed, ranging from the history of ancient Mesopotamia to the Abbasid Empire to present-day Iraq. Included are a historical overview; a country profile; a review of the economy, oil, fauna, and political institution; coverage of the Iran-Iraq War; and coverage of the Kuwait invasion and the second Gulf War and other conflicts. The major ethnic groups such as the Kurds, the Turkumans and the Assyrians, Islam and Muslim sects, Christianity and Christian sects, as well as other religious groups are profiled. Dictionary entries also highlight the main political, religious, and ideological parties, groups, and organizations; major historical personalities; languages; literature; and cultural elements. A broad range of topics, both ancient and modern, are dealt with throughout the introduction and the dictionary, and a comprehensive bibliography complements this extensive historical reference.

Arranged alphabetically, entries include usage information, slang type or source, and additional information about whether the term is, e.g., objectionable, derogatory, or standard English. The entries for some "difficult or unpredictable" words may include pronunciation information. The alphabetic arrangement is augmented by a phrase-finder index and Go to/See also references. If you don't know the meaning of expressions such as "Baldwin" (a good-looking male), "Vietnik" (someone who opposed the Vietnam War), or "face time" (time spent face to face with someone), this book will explain. Some more obvious terms such as "nervous Nellie" (any nervous person), "naw" (no), "what the heck" (it doesn't matter), and "square" (old-fashioned) are included too. And now available in softback, this volume represents a great value-for-money addition to your bookshelf.

Title - Department of Defense Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms

Agency of the Department of Defense. Joint Chiefs of Staff, "Department of Defense Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms"
PDF l 756 Pages l 2 MB

Book Description :

The Department of Defense Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms is a compendium of terminology used by the United States Department of Defense (DOD).

It sets forth standard US military and associated terminology to encompass the joint activity of the Armed Forces of the United States in both US joint and allied joint operations, as well as to encompass the Department of Defense (DOD) as a whole. These military and associated terms, together with their definitions, constitute approved DOD terminology for general use by all components of the Department of Defense. The Secretary of Defense, by DOD Directive 5025.12, 23 August 1989, Standardization of Military and Associated Terminology, has directed its use throughout the Department of Defense to ensure standardization of military and associated terminology.

This publication supplements standard English-language dictionaries with standard terminology for military and associated use. However, it is not the intent of this publication to restrict the authority of the joint force commander (JFC) from organizing the force and executing the mission in a manner the JFC deems most appropriate to ensure unity of effort in the accomplishment of the overall mission.

Title - International Dictionary of Marketing

Daniel Yadin, "International Dictionary of Marketing"
Kogan Page l PDF l 449 Pages l 1 MB

Book Description :

You will find this Dictionary very practical, with text designed as a guide on a dayto- day level. It can help you in two ways. First, it uses language that people actually speak, and helps to make clearer much of the jargon used in marketing. Two examples: you read in a marketing magazine about FMCG; but the author, assuming that everybody knows what this means, fails to explain it. The Dictionary comes to your aid. In a marketing textbook, you come across a term that the author uses and discusses, but which you still cannot fully appreciate. The Dictionary may help to resolve this.

Second, on an even more pragmatic level, it explains marketing practices and procedures. You may, for example, be interested in how the monitoring of Web site hits is carried out. The Dictionary comes to the rescue by explaining ABC// electronic monitoring. Or, you may be undecided whether to use litho or flexography for a catalogue or brochure. The Dictionary helps you to make up your mind, and to understand what your printer is saying.

Title - Elsevier's Dictionary of Chemoetymology

Alexander Senning, "Elsevier's Dictionary of Chemoetymology"
Elsevier Science l PDF l 443 Pages l 2 MB

Book Description :

Noting a marked lack of comprehensiveness and/or contemporaneity among typical reference works on chemical etymology, as well as a somewhat spotty coverage of chemical terms and their etymology in comprehensive dictionaries and textbooks the author decided to write an up-to-date desk reference on chemical etymology which would satisfy the needs of casual readers as well as those of more demanding users of etymological lore. Characteristic user-friendly features of the present work include avoidance of cumbersome abbreviations, avoidance of entries in foreign alphabets, and a broad coverage of all chemical disciplines including mineralogy. Biological, medical, geological, physical and mathematical terms are only considered where they appear of interest to mainstream chemists.

This book does not provide definitions of terms (unless required in the etymological context) nor guidance as to the timeliness of different nomenclature systems. The typical user will from the outset be well aware of the exact meaning of the terms he or she focuses on and only require the etymological background to be used. Examples of sources which have been drawn upon in the preparation of this book, apart from the extremely useful Internet resource Google, are listed, but an exhausting enumeration would be tiresome and impractical..

* an up-to-date desk reference on chemical etymology
* characteristic user-friendly features
* broad coverage of all chemical disciplines
